Ara. A town in the western part of Bihar, northeastern India. It is located about 55 km west of Patna, on the fertile land of the Ganges River basin, producing grains, oilseeds, and sugarcane. It is a distribution center for agricultural products in the region. It was one of the centers of the Indian Rebellion. Population 156,871 (1991).
