Order Euphausiidae, Class Malacostraca. This is the largest species of krill, reaching a body length of 6cm. It is shrimp-shaped, with gills protruding from the sides of the carapace. It is found in the Antarctic Ocean, where it is the main food source for baleen whales, fish, squid, and seabirds, and it is estimated that there are hundreds of millions of tons of resources. The eggs laid in the sea mature about two years after hatching, but in summer, when the water temperature rises, as the amount of phytoplankton (→plankton) increases, they filter it out with their thoracic legs and grow rapidly.
