…If human worship in Islam is the praise of God, then it is natural that dhikr is a major element of ritual. Later, in Islamic mysticism, it came to be practiced as a kind of chanting, whereby such words are repeatedly recited regularly or in groups with certain gestures, thereby constantly remembering God, and furthermore, as a way of reaching a state of ecstasy that transcends the dualistic opposition between the self and God through mental concentration, that is, a mystical experience of union (fanā'). A similar thing is samā', but it has a strong tendency to deviate, such as using song and music in pursuit of fanā'. …
