Okosozukin - Okosozukin

Japanese:
Okosozukin - Okosozukin

A type of hood for women. During the Kyoho era (1716-36), hoods with one sleeve were used, and were called sleeve hoods or Daimyo hoods. It is said that this originated when a monk named Junko was inspired by the hood worn on the statue of the founder Nichiren Shonin and made one himself. The material was black or purple crepe cut into 4 shaku (120 cm) squares, and women's hoods had red silk on the inside. It became very popular as a cold weather gear during the Meiji era, and middle-aged women wore iron, indigo gray, and light blue gray, while young women wore purple, wisteria, and red gray. To wear it, one corner of the square is folded inward and placed on the forehead, and the left and right corners are turned and fastened alternately, leaving only the front of the face covered. It was widely used because it did not ruin the hairstyle.
