… Parsons' sociological theory is systematized under the names "general theory of action" and "social systems theory," and is characterized methodologically as "structural-functionalism." Parsons made his debut in the academic world in 1937 with his 800-page magnum opus, "The Structure of Social Action." He divided the views on human action in the history of European thought since the 19th century into three categories: (1) positivist action theory, (2) utilitarian action theory, and (3) idealist action theory. At the point where these three converge, he conceived a new, comprehensive action theory, which he called "voluntaristic theory of action." …
