Illustrated biography of Shinran Shonin

Illustrated biography of Shinran Shonin
This is an illustrated scroll depicting the life of Shinran, the founder of Jodo Shinshu. As with the Kamakura period biographies of high priests such as the Illustrated Biography of Saint Honen, various illustrated biographies were produced as faith in the founder spread and various sects split up. The first was a two-volume edition of the Illustrated Biography of Saint Zenshin, produced in 1295 (Einin 3), about 30 years after his death, with words written by Shinran's great-grandson and third abbot of Hongan-ji Temple, Kakunyo, and commissioned by the painter-monk Jōga (1275?-1356) of Kōraku-ji Temple in Shiozaki, Shinano Province. However, the original no longer exists, and the Nishi Hongan-ji version from around the 14th century continues the same lineage.
