This battle took place in the autumn of 333 BCE when Alexander the Great, advancing into northern Syria, encountered and defeated the Persian army of Darius III south of Issos. There are various theories about the location of the battlefield, including the current banks of the Payas River and the Kur-Chay River. While searching for the enemy south, Alexander was caught off guard by enemy forces from behind, but he made the most of the narrow coastal plain to achieve victory, opening up the prospect of the complete conquest of the Persian Empire.
