Battle of Issus - Battle of Issus
This battle took place in the autumn of 333 BCE when Alexander the Great, advancing into northern Syria, encountered and defeated the Persian army of Darius III south of Issos. There are various theories about the location of the battlefield, including the current banks of the Payas River and the Kur-Chay River. While searching for the enemy south, Alexander was caught off guard by enemy forces from behind, but he made the most of the narrow coastal plain to achieve victory, opening up the prospect of the complete conquest of the Persian Empire. The floor mosaic excavated in Pompeii depicting this battle is famous. [Omuta Akira]

前333年秋，北シリアに進出したアレクサンドロス大王がイッソスIssos南方でダレイオス3世のペルシア軍と遭遇しこれを破った戦い。戦場の比定については現在のパヤス河畔，クル･チャイ河畔など諸説ある。索敵南下中のアレクサンドロスは背後に敵軍を迎えて不意をつかれたが，狭い海岸平地を活用して勝利を収め，ペルシア帝国完全征服への展望をひらいた。この戦闘を描いたポンペイ出土の床面モザイク画は著名。【大牟田 章】
