Komatsunagi - Komatsunagi

A small herbaceous shrub of the legume family (APG classification: Fabaceae). The stem is highly branched and 60-90 cm tall. The odd-pinnate compound leaves consist of 7-11 leaflets. The leaflets are oblong and 1-2.5 cm long. From July to September, the racemes in the leaf axils produce small, pale pink, butterfly-shaped flowers that grow densely. The legumes contain 3-8 seeds, are thin and cylindrical, about 3 cm long, and ripen to a dark brown color. They grow in slightly dry, sunny places in the mountains and fields from Honshu to Kyushu, and are also found on Jeju Island in Korea and in China. The name is said to come from the fact that the stems are strong enough to tie horses, or that horses like to eat them.

マメ科（APG分類：マメ科）の草状小低木。茎は多数分枝し、高さ60～90センチメートル。葉は奇数羽状複葉で7～11枚の小葉からなる。小葉は長楕円(ちょうだえん)形、長さ1～2.5センチメートル。7～9月、葉腋(ようえき)の総状花序に淡紅色の小さな蝶形花(ちょうけいか)をやや密につける。豆果は3～8個の種子を含み、細い円筒形で、長さ約3センチメートル、茶褐色に熟す。本州から九州の山野のやや乾いた日当りのよい所に生え、朝鮮の済州島、中国にも分布する。名は、茎がじょうぶで馬（駒(こま)）をつなげるほどであるという意味とも、馬が好んで食べるからだともいわれる。
