Located in the north of Scotland, the UK, it consists of over 70 islands. About 20 islands, including Pomona (Maineland), Hoy, and Sunday, are inhabited. It is separated from the Scottish mainland by the Pentland Firth, is generally low-lying, and is made of old red sandstone. It is at 59° north latitude, but has a warm climate. It has the highest agricultural productivity in Scotland, and fishing (herring, cod) and poultry farming are the main industries. There are Neolithic ruins (registered as a World Heritage Site in 1999). Invaded and colonized by Norwegians in the 9th century. It became a Scottish territory in the 15th century.
