Chylothorax - chylothorax

Japanese: 乳糜胸 - にゅうびきょう（英語表記）chylothorax

This is a condition in which chyle (lymph fluid containing many lipid droplets) accumulates in the thoracic cavity. It occurs when chyle leaks from the thoracic duct, which carries the chyle, due to rupture, or when the thoracic duct is blocked, causing chyle to stagnate and leak. It is most often caused by rupture or disruption of the thoracic duct due to trauma, but it can also be caused by pressure from a tumor or congenital abnormalities. Nutrient-rich fluid is lost, so continued outflow from the thoracic duct can lead to nutritional deficiencies. It can often be cured by suctioning out the accumulated fluid and parenteral nutrition, but if this does not work, surgical treatment is required.

乳糜(脂肪滴を多く含んだリンパ液)が胸腔に貯留した状態をいう。乳糜を運ぶ管である胸管の破裂による流出，または胸管閉塞により，乳糜の鬱滞（うつたい）による漏出などによって起こる。外傷による胸管の破裂または断裂によることが最も多いが，そのほか腫瘍による圧迫，先天異常によることもある。栄養に富む液が失われるので，胸管からの流出が持続すると栄養不足となる。貯留液吸引除去と非経口的栄養補給で治癒することも多いが，治癒しないときは外科的に処置する。
