In a closed system that is isolated from the outside world, the total energy within it remains constant. It can also be seen as a modified form of the first law of thermodynamics*. This form of the law of conservation of energy was established as a result of the research of three men: Mayer, Helmholtz, and Joule. According to the theory of relativity, energy and mass are equivalent, so strictly speaking mass must also be considered as being converted into energy; in other words, the theory of relativity can be seen as unifying the law of conservation of energy and the law of conservation of mass.
