Colophon - Okuzuke

Japanese:
Colophon - Okuzuke

This refers to the page or part at the end of a published book that lists the names of the author, editor, translator, publisher, printer, publisher, printing company, printing and publication date, number of prints, edition number, list price, etc. Historically, it is said to have originated from the publication record, but it was legally established when the Edo Shogunate issued a five-article Publishing Control Order in December 1722 (Kyoho 7). Article 4 of the order states, "Regardless of the book, from now on, new editions must include the real names of the author and publisher in the colophon." This was carried over to the Publishing Ordinance (1869) of the new Meiji government, but there were no instructions on the location or format of the colophon. In the Publishing Law (1893), it was changed to "at the end of the document or illustrations," and the format of the colophon was gradually improved. The Publishing Law was abolished in May 1949 (Showa 24), and there are no longer any legal restrictions on the colophon. However, since it is an important part that shows bibliographic information, it is still used as it is.
