A city in northern Utah, United States. It is located in the northern part of the Great Salt Lake basin, close to the eastern shore of the lake. Founded by Mormons in 1847, it was originally named Brownsville. After the transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869, it developed as a key railroad transportation center and a distribution center for goods in the mountains. In addition to light industries such as pharmaceuticals and clothing, the aircraft industry also developed with Hill Air Force Base nearby. Although it is a highland arid basin with a desert on the opposite side of the Great Salt Lake, the city has many trees thanks to the water flowing down from the Wasatch Mountains. Snowbasin Ski Resort is located on nearby Mount Ogden. It is connected to Salt Lake City to form a metropolitan area. Population 63,909 (1990). Ogden |
