...Many also died from the harsh working conditions, and at the Miike coal mine, several dozen prisoner miners died each year from an occupational disease called "yoroke." In addition, during the construction of the Kitami Road, which began in 1891, 1,115 prison laborers worked day and night, resulting in 186 deaths from illness. In these miserable conditions, prisoners also rioted one after another.
