An architectural complex built under the waqf system (a religious donation system in Islamic society). It includes a mosque, a madrasa (school), a caravanserai, a hospital, a Koranic school, a cafeteria, a hammam (bathhouse), etc. It developed mainly in the Ottoman Empire and was also called an imaret. Representative examples include the imaret of Bayezid II in Edirne (15th century) and the imaret of Suleiman in Istanbul (16th century).
