?-A poet from the Arab Duyir tribe around 681. He was appointed judge in Basra by the fourth orthodox caliph, Ali, and participated in the Battle of Siffin. At the command of the governor, Ziyad ibn Abif, he devised a unique method of indicating vowels in order to read the Quran correctly, and eventually opened a private school to teach Arabic grammar. For this reason, he came to be seen as the father of Arabic grammar. His vowel markings were a method of placing dots above and below letters, which differs from modern day ones. [Ikeda Osamu]

アラブのドゥイル族出身の詩人。第4代正統カリフ，アリーによりバスラの裁判官に任じられ，シッフィーンの戦に参加した。総督ジヤード･ブン･アビーフの命令を受けて，コーランを正しく読むための独自の母音表示法を考案し，やがて塾を開いてアラビア語の文法を教えるようになった。このため彼はアラビア語の文法学の祖と見られるにいたった。彼の母音符号は文字の上下に点を打つやり方で，現在のものとは異なる。【池田修】
