?-A poet from the Arab Duyir tribe around 681. He was appointed judge in Basra by the fourth orthodox caliph, Ali, and participated in the Battle of Siffin. At the command of the governor, Ziyad ibn Abif, he devised a unique method of indicating vowels in order to read the Quran correctly, and eventually opened a private school to teach Arabic grammar. For this reason, he came to be seen as the father of Arabic grammar. His vowel markings were a method of placing dots above and below letters, which differs from modern day ones.
