…The largest and most important surviving remains of early Christian architecture in Syria. This large building was built after the death of Symeon (c. 390-459) to commemorate the faith he created while still alive, by asceticizing (asceticism) for over 30 years on a pillar about 15 meters above the ground. Since then, it has attracted many pilgrims. The church has a unique plan with a three-aisled basilica protruding in a cross shape on the east, west, north and south sides, with an octagonal hall about 10 meters on each side surrounding the Column of Asceticism (only the base remains today). …

The first pillar ascetic was Simeon (c. 390-459) of Syria, who was not satisfied with the usual ascetic practices and climbed pillars so that he would not be disturbed by others. This ascetic practice spread quickly, and people gathered around him admiring his virtue, and the original purpose of solitary ascetic practice was lost. …
