Semper - Gottfried Semper

German architect and architectural theorist. Born in Hamburg. After studying law and mathematics at the University of Göttingen, he switched to architecture, studying under the Munich architect Gärtner and being influenced by classicism. After a study trip to France, Italy, and Greece, he became a professor at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts in 1834, and designed the city's opera house (1838-41). From 1849 onwards, he lived in London, Zurich, and Vienna, and designed Vienna's Burgtheater, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, and the Natural History Museum. He presented pioneering theories for his time in books such as "Science, Industry, and the Arts" and "Style in Engineering and the Technical Arts." He died in Rome.

Natural History Museum (Vienna)
The museum was founded in 1748 with the main collection of Franz I, husband of Maria Theresa. It was designed by German architect Semper. It houses around 20 million items, including natural science materials such as minerals and living organisms, and artifacts excavated from ruins. ドイツの建築家、建築理論家。ハンブルク生まれ。ゲッティンゲン大学で法律と数学を学んだのち建築に転じ、ミュンヘンの建築家ゲルトナーに師事して古典主義の感化を受けた。フランス、イタリア、ギリシアを研究旅行後、1834年ドレスデン美術学校教授となり、同地のオペラハウス(1838~41)を設計した。49年以後ロンドン、チューリヒ、ウィーンに住み、ウィーンのブルク劇場や美術史博物館、自然史博物館の設計にあたった。著書『科学、工業および芸術』『工学および工学技術的芸術における様式』などで時代をリードする理論を発表した。ローマで没。
