Bright coal

When observing coal with the naked eye, it is possible to see a mixture of bright, shiny layers and soot-like, dull layers. The former, bright and uniformly composed parts, are called bright coal, while the less bright parts are called dark coal. Bright coal generally contains less mineral matter than dark coal. The majority of coal's structural components are vitrinites.

In addition to the distinction between bright and dark coal, there are also thin, lenticular or layered, scattered grey areas, which are called woody charcoal matrix (or simply charcoal matrix).

肉眼で石炭を観察すると、層状に明るく輝きの強い部分と煤(すす)状で輝きのない部分とが混在していることがある。前者の輝度の高い均一な組成に見える部分を輝炭といい、輝度の低い部分を暗炭という。一般的に輝炭は暗炭に比べて鉱物質が少ない。石炭組織成分としては、ビトリニット類が多い。

　輝炭、暗炭の区別のほかに、細いレンズ状あるいは層状に点在する灰色の部分が見られるが、この部分を木質炭母（あるいは単に炭母）という。
