The capital of Semnan Province in northern Iran. It is located on a vast plain at the southern foot of the Elburz Mountains, at an altitude of 1,138 meters. The city has a magnificently decorated 12th-century minaret, a large prayer hall, and many small streams running along its streets, which have been mentioned by Oriental geographers. It flourished as a local market for grain, cotton, and tobacco, and textiles and carpets were produced there. It was also famous for its soft cotton fabrics and sweet confectionery made from almonds and figs. It is connected to Tehran and Meshed by rail. Population: 64,891 (1986).
