…After moving to Boston and working on woodblock prints and oil paintings, he traveled to Paris twice and absorbed the influence of French Impressionism. After “Grand Prix Day” (1887), he produced impressionist-style works with light brushstrokes, and after returning to Japan in 1898, he formed the American impressionist group “The Ten” with Julian Alden Weir, John Henry Twachtman, Edmund Charles Tarbell, and Frank Weston Benson, and played a central role in the group.
