A river in West Africa. It originates in the Guinea Highlands, flows north through western Mali, and west along the border between Senegal and Mauritania before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean at Saint-Louis. It is 1,641 km long. It is navigable as far as Kayes in Mali except in the dry season. The river basin has long been a stage for the rise and fall of African nations and exchanges, including the Mali Empire and the Samori Empire of Samori Toure. It was also a route for French colonization and trade in West Africa.
