...It is the capital of the prefecture of the same name, the residence of the Minister of Northern Greece, and is also known for its thriving industry and the annual international fair. In ancient times, it was called Thessalonike in Greek and Thessalonika in Latin. In 316 BC, Kassandros, who ruled Macedonia at the time, built the city of Thermē, located at the back of the Gulf of Thermae in eastern Macedonia, by integrating the surrounding towns and named it after his wife. It developed into a key location for land and sea transportation.
