Chemical formula: SiO. Also known as monox. An opaque black glass-like powder with a density of 2.24 g/cm3 and a melting point of over 1700°C. It is made by reacting silicon dioxide (SiO 2) with carbon or silicon carbide. In air, the surface oxidizes to form a silicon dioxide film, making it resistant to chemicals. When placed in water, it reacts to produce hydrogen. Soluble in hydrofluoric acid or a mixture of hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid. Dissolves in warm alkaline solution to produce hydrogen and silicic acid. Burns in oxygen. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
