'aṣabīya (English spelling)

Japanese: アサビーヤ（英語表記）‘aṣabīya

An Arabic word meaning "a sense of community." Originally it meant the sense of community based on blood ties between tribes or clans, and according to legends about Muhammad, he condemned this 'asabiyya as being in opposition to the spiritual bonds of Islam. However, the term became famous through the late 14th century historian Ibn Khaldun, who in his work Discourses on History described 'asabiyya as the most fundamental bond of human social cohesion and the driving force behind history.

〈集団における連帯意識〉を意味するアラビア語。もとは部族や氏族の血縁による連帯意識を意味し，ムハンマドに関する伝承によると，彼はこのアサビーヤをイスラムによる精神的きずなに対立するものとして非難したという。しかしこの語が有名になったのは，14世紀後半の歴史家イブン･ハルドゥーンによってである。彼はその著《歴史序説》の中で，アサビーヤを人間の社会的結合の最も基本的なきずなであり，歴史を動かす動因であるとした。
