Prior to this, there had been personal unions between Sweden and Norway (1319-43) and between Denmark and Norway (1380-1814). In 1389, Margrethe I, regent of Denmark and Norway, was elected regent of Sweden. With the support of the Swedish nobles, she captured Albrecht of Mecklenburg (c. 1340-1412) of Sweden at the Battle of Falköping, and became the de facto ruler of the three kingdoms. In 1397, the nobles of the three countries elected the first common monarch of the three kingdoms at Kalmar Castle near the Danish border in Sweden, and 15-year-old Eric VII of Pomerania, grandson of Margrethe's sister, became king of the three kingdoms. This union was then called the Kalmar Union. …

In 1511, Albrecht of the House of Hohenzollern was elected Grand Master of the German Knights. In 1525, he converted to Lutheranism, secularized the Knights' lands, and received them as fiefdoms from the King of Poland, thus establishing the Duchy of Prussia, Herzogtum Preussen. Albrecht was an exemplary feudal lord, reforming administration and finances, improving church order, and founding the University of Königsberg (1544).
