Eleorchis japonica (A.Gray) F.Maekawa

Japanese: アサヒラン(旭蘭) - アサヒラン(英語表記)Eleorchis japonica (A.Gray) F.Maekawa
Eleorchis japonica (A.Gray) F.Maekawa
A small orchid plant (illustration) that grows in marshes from the subalpine zone to the cool temperate zone. Its name, Asahiran, comes from its crimson-purple flower color. Its other name, Sawararan, comes from the fact that it grows in marshes. The leaves die in winter and the plant overwinters as a pseudobulb. The pseudobulb is about 6 mm in diameter and half-buried in sphagnum moss. One flower stalk and one leaf emerge from the base of the pseudobulb. The leaves are erect, linear-lanceolate, 6-15 cm long and 4-8 mm wide. The flower stalk is 10-30 cm tall and produces one or, rarely, two crimson-purple flowers that bloom in June and July. The sepals do not open flat, but are oblanceolate, 2-2.5 cm long.
