Alexandrian philologist and grammarian from 257 BC to 180 BC. Born in Byzantium (Byzantium). Became director of the Library of Alexandria around 200 BC, and edited works by Homer, Hesiod, and others. He was the first to delete the Odyssey, chapter 23, line 297 and following. Together with Aristarchus, he selected the best works of the classical period by genre, and created the basis of the canon. He also wrote Synopses, Dialects, and Proverbs on tragedy and comedy, as well as other treatises on comedy and grammar. [Ikeda Reitaro]

アレクサンドリアの文献学者，文法家。ビザンティン(ビュザンティオン)に生まれる。前200年ころアレクサンドリア図書館の館長となり，ホメロス，ヘシオドス等の校訂を行う。《オデュッセイア》23章297行以下を削除したのは彼が最初。アリスタルコスとともに古典期の最良の作品をジャンルごとに選び，カノン(正典)の基礎を作った。悲劇･喜劇の《梗概》《方言集》《諺句集》，その他喜劇や文法に関する論文も書いた。【池田黎太郎】
