Alexandrian philologist and grammarian from 257 BC to 180 BC. Born in Byzantium (Byzantium). Became director of the Library of Alexandria around 200 BC, and edited works by Homer, Hesiod, and others. He was the first to delete the Odyssey, chapter 23, line 297 and following. Together with Aristarchus, he selected the best works of the classical period by genre, and created the basis of the canon. He also wrote Synopses, Dialects, and Proverbs on tragedy and comedy, as well as other treatises on comedy and grammar. [Ikeda Reitaro] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
