Also written as "gaikyo" (Gokeshidai), it is a container for carrying food and storing travel necessities. It is often cylindrical in shape, but some are made square. It has a lid with a joint and three legs that curve outward, and is made of wood and lacquered, or has family crests or decorative patterns painted in maki-e. Those with a ring running horizontally from the torso down are called katsura. When carried, it is carried on a balance pole with a thick string tied around the top and bottom. It was used in the early Heian period, and the "Hogen Monogatari" records that it was used to store the heads of killed animals, but in early modern Noh it is used as a seat.

外居とも書き（『江家次第(ごうけしだい)』）、食物を入れて運んだり、旅行のときの必需品を収める器である。形は多く円筒形であるが、角形につくったものもある。合口(あいくち)造りの蓋(ふた)をつけ、外へ反った足を三つつけ、木造で漆を塗ったり、家紋や装飾文様を蒔絵(まきえ)で描いたものがある。胴部以下に横に輪を巡らしたものを葛(かつら)とよんでいる。持ち運ぶときは、太い紐(ひも)を上下にかけて天秤(てんびん)棒で担う。平安初期には用いられ、『保元(ほうげん)物語』に討ち取った首を入れたことが記されているが、近世の能では腰掛に用いている。
