…Since 1380, when Norway and Denmark entered into a personal union, Norway has been under the rule of Denmark, and since 1852, Norway has been an autonomous territory with its own official language and flag. The capital city is Thorshavn (15,000 people, 1996) on the island of Streym. The average winter temperature is 3.9°C (January), the highest in Northern Europe, but the summer is cool at 11.1°C (August), and the precipitation is 1433mm, more than twice that of the mainland, giving Norway a typical maritime climate. The islands, which are based on lava, were once known as the "Islands of Sheep," but in the late 19th century, the focus of industry shifted from agriculture to fishing, and in order to protect the fishing industry, Norway did not comply with the mainland's accession to the EC (1973). …
