Fabrics made from cellulose fibers shrink when washed. To prevent this, Sanforized is a mechanical shrink-proofing process that uses a Sanforized machine (see diagram), and is primarily applied to cotton fabrics. The raw fabric is steamed and pressed against an endless felt (or rubber belt) with a heated cylinder, and the expansion and contraction of the felt surface is used to shrink the fabric lengthwise by a pre-calculated amount, thereby limiting the washing shrinkage rate to within 1% both vertically and horizontally. Invented by the American Sanford L. Cluett, Sanforized (commonly known as Sanforized) is a registered trademark of the American company Cluett Peabody & Co. Inc., and is used to guarantee the quality of mechanically shrink-proofed products made by companies that have introduced the technology.
