Ogawa [village] - Ogawa

Japanese: 緒川[村] - おがわ
Ogawa [village] - Ogawa
A village in Naka County, northern Ibaraki Prefecture. Population 4,867 (1995). It is located in the Yamizo Mountains, with the Ogawa River, a tributary of the Naka River, flowing through the eastern part of the village. 60% of the village area is forest, and only 10% is arable land. There are many small part-time farmers, and while charcoal production and tobacco leaf cultivation were once the main businesses, in recent years livestock farming and shiitake mushroom cultivation have been taking place. There has been a significant outflow of population, and in 1970 the village was designated a depopulated area. In the early Meiji period, a peasant uprising (the Oze Disturbance) occurred in this village in opposition to land tax reform. [Chiba Tatsuya]
