Japan Society for the Promotion of Science

An independent administrative institution under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology that provides grants for academic research, provides funds for the training of researchers, and promotes international academic exchange. Its English name is Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, abbreviated as JSPS. It was established in 2003 (Heisei 15) based on the Independent Administrative Institution Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Act (Law No. 159 of 2002). Its headquarters are in Kojimachi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo. It has research liaison centers in 10 locations overseas, including Washington, London, and Beijing.

Its predecessor was the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, which was established in 1932 (Showa 7) with a grant of 1.5 million yen from the Imperial Household. In 1967 (Showa 42), it was reorganized as a special corporation, and in 2003, as part of the "Central Government Reform," it became an independent administrative institution. During this time, it has carried out projects to support young researchers, invite foreign researchers, and award the Chichibunomiya Memorial Academic Award (ended in 1995). Its main activities include support for university research and education, assistance for training researchers, advanced research grant funds, overseas dispatch of young researchers, support for building world-class research centers, support for international conferences, providing international training opportunities for young researchers, inviting researchers, awarding prizes such as the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Prize, and publishing activities. As of March 2012, its capital was 1,065.1 million yen, and it had 136 employees.

学術研究の助成、研究者の養成のための資金の支給、学術に関する国際交流の促進などを行う文部科学省所管の独立行政法人。英語名はJapan Society for the Promotion of Science、略称JSPS。独立行政法人日本学術振興会法(平成14年法律第159号)に基づいて2003年(平成15)設立。本部は東京都千代田区麹町(こうじまち)。ワシントン、ロンドン、北京(ペキン)など海外10か所に研究連絡センターがある。

 1932年(昭和7)、皇室からの下賜金150万円をもとに創設された財団法人日本学術振興会が前身である。1967年(昭和42)特殊法人に再編、2003年「中央省庁等改革」の一環として独立行政法人化された。この間若手研究者に対する支援事業、外国人研究者招聘(しょうへい)事業、秩父宮(ちちぶのみや)記念学術賞(1995年終了)の授与などを行ってきた。おもな事業は、大学が行う研究・教育への支援や研究者養成のための援助、先端研究助成基金、若手研究者海外派遣、世界最高水準研究拠点構築への支援、国際学会等の支援、若手研究者に対する国際的な研鑽(けんさん)機会の提供、研究者の招聘、日本学術振興会賞などの顕彰、出版事業などである。2012年3月時点での資本金は10億6510万円、職員数は136人。
