The Eight Great Children

Japanese: 八大童子 - はちだいどうじ

Abbreviation of the Eight Great Vajrapani. Eight kinds of statues that accompany Acala are modeled in the form of children. The Eight Great Vajrapani, who are messengers, are Eko, Eki, Anoudatta, Shitoku, Ugubaka, Shojo Bhikkhu, Kongara, and Seitaka. An example is the statue in the Fudo Hall of Kongobuji Temple, created in the early Kamakura period.

八大金剛童子の略。不動明王に随従する8種の尊像を童子形に造形化したもの。使者である八大童子には，慧光 (えこう) ，慧喜，阿耨達多 (あのくだった) ，指徳 (しとく) ，烏倶婆迦 (うぐばか) ，清浄 (しょうじょう) 比丘，矜羯羅 (こんがら) ，制た迦 (せいたか) の諸童子があり，作例として鎌倉時代初期制作の金剛峰寺不動堂の彫像がある。
