Pathologist. Born in Tokyo. Graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of Tokyo Imperial University in 1907 (Meiji 40), he became an assistant professor in the pathology department. In 1910, he studied in Germany, mainly studying pathology under Aschoff. In 1913 (Taisho 2), he returned to Japan and became an associate professor at his alma mater. The following year, in 1914, he obtained his medical doctorate for his main thesis, "The Development of Liver Cirrhosis and Jaundice in Vas Deferens Ligation and Ecterogen Intoxication." In 1923, he became a professor of pathology, a position he held until 1943 (Showa 18). During this time, he devoted himself to research into the nature of beriberi, the discovery of the endocrine mechanism of the salivary gland, the investigation of Kashin-Beck disease, the purification of parotin (a salivary gland hormone preparation), and the nature of senile changes. In 1944, he was awarded the Imperial Academy Prize for his research into the salivary gland. After retiring from the University of Tokyo, he served as president and chairman of the Tokyo Medical University board of directors, member of the Japan Academy, professor at Nippon Medical School, director of the Institute of Geriatrics, and was awarded the Order of Culture in 1957. His books include "General Pathology" and "Introduction to Pathology."
