...To the extent that "dream" is considered the privileged space of such theater, it often takes on the aspect of "dream drama," and in that sense Maeterlinck's Princess Maraine (1889) and Pelléas et Mélisande (1893) were welcomed by the Symbolist movement because of the "tragic nature of everyday life" of the "slightly wicked sleepwalker" that the author himself described. Just as A. Antoine's Théâtre Libre was an avant-garde movement based on Zola's theory of naturalism, the poet Paul Fort's (1872-1960) Théâtre d'Art (founded in 1890) and then Lugne Pau's Théâtre de l'Œuvre (founded in 1893) sought to be temples of Symbolist theater. Lune Poe's aesthetics, which sought to express a universal "drama of the soul" that was not restricted by time or place through verse on an abstract stage with only a backdrop, combined with the performances of Nordic writers such as Ibsen (Rosmersholm) produced unrealistic, dreamlike plays. *Some of the terms mentioned in "Théâtre d'Art" are listed below.
