Strachey, Evelyn John St. Loe
Born: 21 October 1901, Guildford, Surrey
[Died] July 15, 1963, London. British politician and Labour Party theorist. In 1923, while studying at Oxford University, he joined the Independent Labour Party. In 1929, he was elected to the House of Commons as a Labour member, but left the party in 1931 to join the Communist Party. With the outbreak of World War II in 1939, he broke with the Communist Party, and in 1945 returned to the Labour Party and was elected to the House of Commons. He served as Secretary of State for Food in the C. Attlee cabinet from 1946 to 1950, and Secretary of State for War from 1950 to 1951. In The Nature of Capitalist Crisis (1935), he presented a neo-Marxist theory on the fate of capitalism and imperialism. In Contemporary Capitalism (56), he evaluated British parliamentary democracy as the best system for enabling a peaceful transition to socialism. In The End of Empire (59), he criticized Lenin and argued that even if capitalism had become too mature, imperialist expansion could be curbed by redistributing national income and increasing domestic investment.

Strachey
Strachey, (Giles) Lytton

Born: March 1, 1880, London
[Died] January 21, 1932. Hungerford, Berkshire. British critic and biographer. After graduating from Cambridge University, he was active as a member of the Bloomsbury Group. In 1912, he published Landmarks in French Literature, an excellent survey of French literature, and continued to promote French literature thereafter. His representative works include biographies such as Eminent Victorians (1918), Queen Victoria (21), and Elizabeth and Essex (28), which revolutionized the traditional approach to biographies, which had been limited to praising the deceased. He greatly elevated the artistic status of biographical literature, and is often referred to as the French A. Maurois.
