A village in Higashiusuki County in northern Miyazaki Prefecture. Population 2,687 (1995). Located on the northern bank of the upper reaches of the Mimikawa River. Occupying a corner of the Kyushu Mountains, the area is almost entirely covered by forests, with cultivated land along the Nanatsuyama River and Yanagiwara River, tributaries of the Mimikawa River. The main industries are agriculture and forestry, and the area produces shiitake mushrooms, timber, rice, tea, and more. This area, with its steep topography, was once dominated by slash-and-burn agriculture, but in the Showa era, sawtooth oak trees were planted in the slash-and-burn fields, and shiitake mushroom cultivation using these trees became the main industry. Taking advantage of the abundant water, power generation has progressed, and power plants have been built on the main and tributaries of the Mimikawa River.
