pilot ignition

...the phenomenon in which a mixture of a flammable substance and air or another oxidizing agent begins to burn spontaneously when heated. Along with pilot ignition, it is the main form of combustion initiation. The behavior of spontaneous combustion varies somewhat depending on the type and state of the substance, heating conditions, etc., but the mechanism of its occurrence can often be explained based on the balance between heat generated by chemical reactions such as oxidation, decomposition, and polymerization within the mixture and heat released to the outside.
