Kikuchi Yuho

Japanese: 菊池幽芳 - きくちゆうほう
Kikuchi Yuho

Novelist and journalist. His real name was Kiyoshi. He was born in Ibaraki Prefecture. After graduating from Mito Middle School, he worked at an elementary school for a while, but in 1891 (Meiji 24) he joined the Osaka Mainichi Shimbun Company, where he was in charge of social articles, and later became a director. During that time, he published adaptations of Western novels such as Mitsuko no Himitsu (1892-93) in the Osaka Mainichi Shimbun, but he soon took up the pen of family novels, which were showing signs of becoming popular, and published works such as Omo ga Tsumi (My Own Sin) (1899-1900) in the same paper, becoming known as a representative writer of family novels, and his works were performed in the Shinpa theater style. He was the older brother of the English literature scholar Tozawa Koya, and was good at languages, which is said to have helped him in his literary activities.
