…Originally, the Sasaki clan's base was in Kowaki, Yokaichi City, but around this time Kannonji Castle became the main castle of the Rokkaku clan, and the castle grounds and castle town were gradually developed. Historical documents remain that show that in 1533 (Tenbun 2), lumber was requisitioned from nearby villages to build a nail puller (wooden gate) for the stone temple under the castle, and large-scale renovation work was repeated in the mid-16th century from Rokkaku Sadayori to Rokkaku Yoshikata. Records such as one showing that in 1539, a monk from Shokoku-ji Temple visited and held a banquet in a two-story mansion inside the castle indicate that by this time the castle had already taken on the appearance of a permanent residence. …
