…Originally, the Sasaki clan's base was in Kowaki, Yokaichi City, but around this time Kannonji Castle became the main castle of the Rokkaku clan, and the castle grounds and castle town were gradually developed. Historical documents remain that show that in 1533 (Tenbun 2), lumber was requisitioned from nearby villages to build a nail puller (wooden gate) for the stone temple under the castle, and large-scale renovation work was repeated in the mid-16th century from Rokkaku Sadayori to Rokkaku Yoshikata. Records such as one showing that in 1539, a monk from Shokoku-ji Temple visited and held a banquet in a two-story mansion inside the castle indicate that by this time the castle had already taken on the appearance of a permanent residence. …

…元来佐々木氏の本拠は八日市市の小脇にあったが，このころから観音寺城が六角氏の本城となり，順次城郭と城下町の整備が進んだ。1533年(天文2)に城下石寺の釘抜(木戸)を作るために付近の村から用材を徴発したのをはじめ，16世紀の中ごろ，六角定頼から六角義賢の代にかけて大規模な改修工事をくり返したことを示す史料が残る。1539年相国寺の僧が訪れ，城内の2階建ての屋形で宴が設けられたという記録などから，このころには恒久的な居城の体裁ができ上がっていたことがわかる。…
