The capital of the U.S. state of Alaska. It is located in the southeastern part of the state, at the western foot of the Coast Mountains, and faces the Gastineau Strait, which is complicated by a fjord. Gold mines were discovered there in 1880, and in 1900 it replaced Sitka as the region's center. After the gold mines were closed in 1944, fishing and forestry became the main industries. It became the state capital when Alaska became a state in 1959. It has an ice-free port and is a base for salmon fishing, and is home to seafood processing such as canning and lumber. With Glacier Bay National Park to the northwest, tourism is also thriving. In 1970, it merged with Douglas across the strait, making it the largest city in the U.S. with an area of 8,050 km2 . It is home to the University of Alaska (established in 1972) and the State Museum. Population 26,751 (1990). Juneau |
