An annual plant of the Apiaceae family that grows to about 30-100cm (illustration). It has long been a folk medicine in Egypt and North Africa, and illustrations and descriptions can be found in Dioscorides's "Drugs Book." It produces finely divided leaves that resemble carrots. It produces numerous scattered flowers in summer and has oblong fruits. In Egypt, these fruits are called khella or khella fruit. It contains the furochromone derivatives khellin (active ingredient), visnagin, visamminol, khellolglucoside, and the coumarin derivatives samidin and dihydrosamidin.
