Stock trading can be broadly divided into exchange trading through a stock exchange and other trading (off-exchange trading) such as over-the-counter trading. In Japan, exchange trading is the core of stock trading. Exchange trading is highly organized in terms of both systems and trading techniques, and large volumes of buy and sell orders are concentrated there every day to ensure smooth trading and fair price determination. Exchange trading is limited to listed stocks that meet certain criteria. On the other hand, over-the-counter trading generally involves unlisted stocks.

株式取引は，証券取引所を通じる取引所取引と，店頭取引等のそれ以外の取引(市場外取引)とに大別される。日本では，取引所取引が株式取引の中心をなしている。取引所取引は，制度面でも売買技術面でも高度に組織化されており，日々，大量の売買注文が集中して円滑な取引が行われ，公正な価格が決定されるよう配慮されている。取引所取引の対象は，一定の基準に合致した上場株式に限定されている。一方，店頭取引の対象は，原則として非上場株式である。
