A battle in October 1777 that became a turning point in the American War of Independence. Under a strategic plan to separate New England from the colonies south of New York, British forces under the command of General Burgoyne set out from Canada, but without the support of their allies, they were surrounded by American forces under the command of General Gates at Saratoga in northern New York and surrendered. France, which had been watching the situation quietly, officially provided assistance to the Americans as a result of this battle, and went on to form the Franco-American Alliance.
