1739‐1804 A historian and linguist from Finland (then part of Sweden). Born into a pastor's family, he studied at the University of Turku, and later worked as a lecturer in Latin language and literature and a librarian, devoting himself to organizing and expanding the library and collecting folklore. He published the first newspaper in Finland to present research on the language, history, and geography of the country. After being promoted to professor, he studied in Göttingen, Germany, where he came into contact with comparative linguistics and shifted the focus of his research to the origins and evolution of the Finns.
