A British intelligence agency whose main mission is intelligence activities overseas. In the waning days of the Cold War, British Prime Minister Major, who aimed for an open government, officially acknowledged the existence of MI6 for the first time in May 1993. Similarly, there is MI5, whose main mission is to uncover domestic espionage, but in July of the same year, the Home Office's Security Service (MI5) itself published a pamphlet explaining its activities, and its female director appeared in front of a television camera. After the Cold War, its main mission became the prevention of terrorism, including that of the Irish Republican Army (IRA).

イギリスの情報機関。国外での情報活動をおもな任務とする。冷戦終焉の状況下で，開かれた政府を目指すイギリスのメージャー首相は，1993年5月，MI6の実在を初めて公式に認めた。同様に国内スパイの摘発をおもな任務とする MI5があるが，これに関しても，同年7月に内務省情報局保安部 (MI5) みずからがその活動を説明するパンフレットを発表し，女性部長がテレビカメラの前に姿を現した。冷戦後はアイルランド共和軍 IRAなどのテロの防止活動が主要な任務となっている。
