New trends in the socialist economy since the 1980s can be seen in two aspects: theoretically, the emergence of the ``dilemma'' theory, and institutionally, the move toward a ``mixed economic system.''
[Dilemma theory]
The traditional socialist economic system is an economy in which money only plays a passive role (borus) and individual economic agents are not forced to make efforts to maximize surplus, but the Hungarian economist Kornai János (1928- ) sees this system as a semi-monetized economy in which only households are monetized and the corporate sector is not. The reason for this is that the budget constraints on companies are soft due to the state's paternalism.

　1980年代に入ってからの社会主義経済の新しい動向は，理論的には〈ジレンマ〉論の登場，制度的には〈混合経済システム〉への志向，という二つの面でみられる。
