Goldcrest - Kikuitadaki (English spelling)

It is a bird of the family Muscicapidae, subfamily Muscicapinae, order Passeriformes, class Aves. It is the smallest bird in Japan, with a total length of about 10 cm and a weight of 4-6 grams. It lives in the highlands of Asia and the coniferous forests of Europe, and in Japan it breeds in the subalpine coniferous forests of Hokkaido and Honshu, and spends the winter on the plains. Its whole body is dark green, with a bright yellow band on its head, and in the male's winter plumage, there is an additional bright orange-red band in the middle of the band. The Japanese name is thought to be a reference to the yellow part of the head, which resembles a chrysanthemum flower. It flies busily between the leaves, preying on spiders, insects, and other prey with its thin, small beak. It builds a nest suspended from spider silk between the leaves of conifers, and lays about 10 eggs.

There are five species of birds in the genus Kinglet, three in Eurasia and two in North America, and they are similar in size and appearance to each other.

鳥綱スズメ目ヒタキ科ウグイス亜科の鳥。日本でいちばん小さな鳥で、全長約10センチメートル、体重4～6グラム。アジアの高地とヨーロッパの針葉樹林にすみ、日本では北海道、本州の亜高山帯の針葉樹林で繁殖し、冬は平地で生活する。全身暗緑色で、頭部に鮮やかな黄色の帯があり、雄の冬羽では、さらにその帯の中央に鮮やかな橙赤(とうせき)色の帯がある。和名は、この頭部の黄色部をキクの花に見立てたものと思われる。葉の間をせわしく飛び回りながら、細く小さな嘴(くちばし)で、クモ、昆虫などを捕食する。針葉樹の葉の間にクモの糸で吊(つ)り下げた巣をつくり、約10卵を産む。

　キクイタダキ属の鳥は全部で5種あり、ユーラシアに3種、北アメリカに2種分布し、大きさ、姿とも互いに似ている。
