Dermatoglyphics

Dermatoglyphics
This refers to small skin ridges like those found on the surface of the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet; in humans, they are ridges about 0.5 mm wide. Small pores (sweat pores) through which sweat escape are open at roughly regular intervals on the surface of the cutaneous ridges. Sweat keeps the cutaneous ridges moderately flexible, enhancing the sensitivity of the tactile receptors inside the skin and providing a non-slip effect on the skin surface. For this reason, skin with cutaneous ridges (ridge skin) is sometimes called tactile skin (or sensory skin) or friction skin.
